The Georgia Public Service Commission may decide next week about requiring 10-digit calling in the 706 area code when it "overlays" a new area code on top of the same geography, the
Athens Banner-Herald reports. The
PSC plugs the overlay idea on its Web site. (Want to sound off? Here's
contact info for the PSC.) How bad off are we? The people who keep up with area code info for the U.S. and Canada are the
North American Numbering Plan. They say there are
77 prefixes left in the 706 area code as of June 1, and we're in "jeopardy" of running out (link goes to PDF on their site).
